Prof.Bi’s main research interests are in the field of environmental analytical chemistry, bio-electrochemistry, particularly focusing on the interaction of toxic metal ions and nano-particulates with some important biological molecules including proteins and DNA. By applying various modern analytical methodologies including electrochemical, spectrometric, chromatographic, magnetic methods, as well as combining with computer simulations and quantum chemical calculations, the structure and mechanism of action of metallobiomolecules are studied comprehensively. Now, he is carrying out a new research work toward to establish the novel electrochemical methods to monitor and detect the free radicals generated in the biological and environmental chemistry processes in situ, in order to further deep understanding of the effect of metal ions and organic molecules on the electron transfer rate through DNA.

particles to achieve enhanced permeability and retention effect in tumour tissues. For example, bis-phosphonates, peptides,

3) Development of a variety of fluorescent sensors which can be used for the detection of biologically essential metal ions, 

environmentally toxic heavy metals, inorganic drug species, DNA nucleases, and small signaling inorganic molecules.

The general research field is supramolecular chemistry and smart materials. The current research interests on the supramolecular system of molecular devices cover from the molecular macrocycles and cages to topological molecules, to the supramolecular polymers: 

1) Design and synthesis of macrocycle and molecular cages for molecular recognition and supramolecular catalysts; 

2) Molecular devices, especially focus on the molecular rotor, molecular gyroscopes, dynamic molecular rotaxanes and catenanes; The non-covalent bonded catenane was the first one interlocked by multiple hydrogen bonding interaction instead of metal-ligand interaction from our hand;

3) The creation of advanced supramolecular polymers constructed by orthogonal self-assembly. These artificially designed materials can be potentially applied as the smart materials in multiple specific areas. 

The project will continue the previously established results and further explore new possibilities for supramolecular smart materials, as well as their applications as the artificial intelligent materials.

Research Interests:

   As an important class of inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal phosphonates have received increasing attentions in the past two decades owing to their potential applications in ion-exchange and absorption, catalysis, proton conductivity and optics etc. We focus on the assembly of new metal phosphonate materials with novel architectures and interesting physical and chemical properties. Particular attentions are being paid on the paramagnetic 3d and 4f systems in order to discover excellent molecule-based magnets, chiral or polar materials in order to explore new optical and multifunctional materials, and proton conductors for fuel cell applications.

1. Molecule-based magnets
    The search for new low- or high-dimensional molecule-based magnets has been of intense current interest due to their potential applications in the information storage, molecular spintronics and quantum computing. Of equal importance is the modulation of magnetic behavior via external stimuli. By incorporating phosphonate ligands, we have succeeded in synthesizing a number of 3d or 4f compounds that show single molecule magnet (SMM), single-chain magnet (SCM) and long-range ordering behaviors. The tuning of the magnetic behaviors by structures and external stimulus has been investigated.

2. Clean energy-related materials
    Proton-conducting materials are essential components of fuel cells and hence are very important in the field of clear energy. We aim at exploring new high-performance proton conductors based on metal phosphonates and understanding the mechanism about the proton conduction pathways.

3. Other functional metal phosphonates
    Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are of intense current interest. Compared with the popular carboxylates, metal phosphonates possess relatively high thermal and chemical stabilities. However, phosphonate-based MOFs are still rare. On the other hand, metal phosphonates can be designed and synthesized for particular purpose simply by modifying the organic groups of the ligands. We are interested in assembling novel phosphonate-based MOFs, chiral or polar compounds in order to explore materials with multifunctions.
