Dr. Jie ZHANG, professor of geography and tourism, is acting as the Director of University Institute for Tourism Research, Nanjing University, China. Dr. Zhang has studied geomorphology and later transferred his interests into tourism and heritage research. Zhang was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. He received his B. Sc and M. Sc in 1982, 1987 from Nanjing University. He was the joint-Ph.D. student in School of Geography, Oxford, U.K. in 1988-1989 by SBFS, and obtained doctoral degree from Nanjing University, China in 1990.
Zhang’s research interests include tourist and allied flows, regional impacts and tourism planning, Chinese cultural and art heritages, geomorphologic heritage and its evaluation, empiric aesthetics of calligraphic art, and tourism and the Internet, as well as cross-culture communication and national identity.
Zhang is the author and co-author of more than 200 refereed papers published in scholarly journals or book chapters in the fields of geography and tourism either in Chinese and English, as well as in Japanese. According to Chinese academic searching website, CNKI (in 2014), the total number of citation of Zhang’s papers is more than 6000 times, and his H-index is 44and ranks 96-106 among all the academic authors in China. In 2014, Zhang was awarded by Chinese Geographical Society (CGS) as the National Outstanding Geographical Researcher, and the one of the winner of the Top Paper Contribution Author Award by Acta Geographica Sinica. Two of his paper was awarded as Most cited Paper Award by CGS. His research paper on calligraphic aesthetics and culture was awarded as various outstanding paper several times by national China Calligrapher’s Association, and still keep the top 1 position in the most cited author according to CNKI system.
Zhang’s finished research projects include five projects supported by the National Science Foundation of China, three by the National Ministry of Construction, one by the National Ministry of Education, four provincial tourism planning projects, and dozens of regional tourism master planning projects either invited by local governments or won by bidding, and also a research project supported by UESCO (2014) and a joint-research project supported by British Academy (2007). His last finished NSFC project was titled as “Calligraphy Landscapes in China: Processes of Geographical Differentiation and Sense of Place”. His newly approved NSFC project (2016-2019) is titled as “Natural soundscape: its type classification, spatial structure and resource evaluation model”.
Zhang’s awarded research projects include: Spatial connectivity of Chinese Internet (2nd Class Award of Outstanding Youth Geographical Paper, Geographic Society of China, 1997 ), Tourist Flow to Chinese National Park (Best China paper Awards by APTA, 1999), National Pilot Evaluation System for Historic Township (3rd Class Provincial Scientific Progress Awards of Jiangsu, 2007), National Pilot Guidelines for Conservation Planning of Historic Township and Village (3rd-Class Provincial Soft Science Awards), Town Planning projects with 2nd class Municipal Awards of Best Tourism Planning of Nanjing (2005), and three 1st Class Awards of the Outstanding Tourism Planning of Jiangsu Province, as well as many outstanding paper awards by various academic organizations. Zhang is also active in public service and popularization of geography and traditional Chinese culture.
Zhang’s research and practice in art include traditional Chinese landscape painting, Chinese calligraphy (Seal script, Oracle inscription script, Standard script), Seal engraving, traditional poem and couplet, and music of traditional Chinese vertical flute.

6. ART PRACTICE AND RESEARCH
Zhang’s research and practice in art include traditional Chinese landscape painting, Chinese calligraphy (Seal script, Oracle inscription script, standard script), Seal engraving, traditional poem and couplet, and music of traditional Chinese vertical flute. Zhang is also acting as the executive head of the University Research Centre of Oriental Calligraphy and Painting, Nanjing University. He wrote poems in traditional Chinese poem style and published some on newspapers like People’s Daily (overseas edition) etc. Zhang reported a hole-fingering model in high pitch for Xiao (a traditional Chinese musical instrument, the bamboo vertical flute). Zhang has published many papers either in Chinese and English on aesthetics research on calligraphy, won several academic awards of outstanding calligraphic research paper from national Chinese Calligrapher’s Association. Zhang developed the evolutionary model of natural image and calligraphic aesthetic.
